Week 4 of The Bevern Olympics

DAY 8

Rhythm gymnastics

This was a real favourite for many of our residents as it was so similar to wheelchair dancing. Chloe started first and absolutely loves to dance to music. She performed with such enthusiasm, smiling and singing out with joy. ‘Dancing queen’ was her soundtrack of choice and used the ribbons to form different shapes. The judges enjoyed her creativity and smile as she span round which got her a score of 26.75 points. Next up was James, another keen dancer. He smiled his way through a solid routine, some would say it was too safe with not enough moves but still scored a good 27 points.

Simon pulled out some good moves but the judges felt it was only worth 25.75 points. It all changed when Paul smashed it with a stunning 27.5 points using the hoops, balls and the ribbon in one dance. His performance was matched by Amy who tried some difficult moves and also got 27.5. Mark’s performance had mixed reviews, being described as a confusing performance but very creative and got a high score of 27.5 points.

The competition ended with JP who mesmerised the judges with tricks and moves of a high difficulty whilst smiling throughout. The judges gave him 30 points for the gold with Amy, Mark and Paul going home with a joint silver medal.

Track & Field The Walking Aid Sprint-

Ciaron set a good starting time of 1 min 32 in his walker. Saleem then brought that time down to 1.01mins. Simon had a slow start in his time trial but soon got momentum, pulling off a hard worked 3.30mins. Amy went next and pushed really hard, she was on target for beating Saleem’s time until the very end when she slowed down to a 1.06 minute time. Mark ended the competition, crossing the line after 1.41mins. A wonderful win for Saleem! Amy was pleased with her silver and Ciaron proudly wore his bronze medal for the rest of the day. Self-Drive Sprint Ciaron was thrilled to show off his new wheels and win the race against Simon. With only two residents who can drive their own chairs, there was only Gold and Silver up for grabs. Both put in full effort for the win but Ciaron prevailed this time.

DAY 9 TENNIS

Today we saw the second half of the draw.  James faced Paul in the quarter final. James won 2 games to nil in a gripping contest.  In the second quarter-final, Simon went straight through the next round due to another resident pulling out last minute. This set up a fascinating semi final between James and Simon. Simon got an early lead with some wonderful returns. He was full of smiles as he won his points. He won the first game easily. James was struggling to get a grip on the game when he went down two break points. Simon was very excited but allowed his excitement to get the better of him as James clawed his way back to win the game.  In the final game Simon was not going to lose a lead again and quickly punished James’ sloppy serving, despite the biggest grin on his face.  With match point, Simon pushed a return towards James only for the ball to land on an acorn and suddenly change direction. The win was Simon’s, along with a place in the final against Amy.

In the final Amy dispatched Simon easily. She won emphatically in two games, only dropping a few points. She was so happy with herself, grinning from ear to ear. That was Amy’s first gold of the games and didn’t she know it!

Day 10 TRACK & FIELD – Sprint relay

The final track competition of these games was today. We had two teams captained by JP and Amy.  Amy started at blistering pace, much to her excitement. Chloe couldn’t get close in that first leg.  Amy’s team then had multiple gold medel winner, Mark on the 2nd leg who kept the lead despite JP gaining on him.  The 3rd leg saw holly excellerate into a big lead again after a poor hand over between JP and Paul. Paul just could make the ground up. James anchored Amy’s team to Gold with Paul lagging behind in his 2nd leg for a hard fought Silver.

BASKETBALL

James, Holly & Amy faced JP, Paul and Chloe. The game was tense with the lead changing between the two teams. JP showed some amazing interplay with his team mates, taking a tiny lead into the second half (7-6) After a dropped catch by the basket, JP’s team seemed to fall apart just as James’ team gained momentum. Suddenly points came easy and James’ team won 15-7.

STOOL BALL

Chloe won her first Gold medal of the games in the final contest of the games. Her team of Saleem, holly and Simon confidently batted to 23 runs before a fielding master class. They held off Mark, JP, James and Paul, who scored 20 runs.

THE POOL

The Syncronised swimming was wrapped up. James won the gold, JP silver and holly Bronze.

Ciaron held his gold medal spot in the 2 width sprint with Mark in silver position.

Mark won gold in the Aqua Basketball taking his tally up to 7 Gold Medals which puts him at the top of the medal table.
