The Bevern View Olympics- Week 2

Track and Field

It was a morning of throwing events using our giant sling-shot. We had our version of the Javelin and The Shot Put. JP was the bookies favourite until he got distracted by the banter and ended up trying to aim his spear at the umpire. He ended the Javelin in 5th place.

The competition hotted up with an outrageous Javelin throw by Mark but the quality got better and better. Paul stepped up with a throw well beyond Mark’s, but it was Saleem who stole the gold with an absolute beauty of a throw.

In the Shot Put Mark held the lead for quite a while and everyone thought it was going to be mark’s 5th Gold of the games, until Simon pulled off a world class throw to take Gold, just moments after saying “I will win a gold medal!”. Saleem got a bronze with his final throw.

GOLF

We watched a fine display in the Golf on Barcombe Rec and the competition was nonetheless fierce. Paul got the show started with 13 shots over 4 holes. JP spent more time chilling in the sun than putting the ball in the hole, falling short with 24. Simon really enjoyed his round, smiling and commentating as he scored his 17. Only Saleem or Mark could topple Paul off the Podium with Mark pushing him close, right to the last hole, scoring 15. Paul gets Gold with Mark and Simon sharing the Silver.

ARCHERY

Our leading gold medalist, Mark, showed a heroic performance in the Archery. He didn’t make the podium but showed real grit and determination after an anxious start. JP set the mood with some big points (11) in the first two rounds. Saleem nonchalantly kept himself in the hunt for a medal, making time for some sunbathing between rounds. Chloe did what Chloe does best.. smiling, laughing and screaming with excitement and of course forgetting to get points on the board. James looked confident and competed with a beaming smile but despite his superb style with the bow, it wasn’t his day. The heat was getting to Paul and Holly too, with low scoring rounds, whilst Simon stormed into the lead in the third and final round with 17 points, putting the pressure on JP. Amy started slowly with 4 points in the first two rounds, but was keeping her cards close to her chest with her poker face but burst into life in the final round when she over took JP’s 11 points with a stunning total of 12. Saleem too, put the pressure on JP, equalling Simon in the final round with 17 points. To win Gold, JP needed just 7 points from his last 4 arrows. The crowd went deadly quiet as the tension grew… but JP crumbled at the final hurdle and missed all his shots ending with 11, just outside of the medals.

The bronze went to Amy, her first medal of the games, but we had a play off for Gold between Simon and Saleem. Saleem chose to play it safe down the middle for 2 points. Simon gambled for the 3 pointer target and the crowd gasped as it went narrowly wide. The Gold was Saleem’s but Simon was thrilled with the silver, especially with his family watching from the stands.
